What actually happens
Shortening — trousers, jeans, skirts, sleeves
The most common job. I shorten with a plain hem or keep the original one — on jeans that is the edge with the lighter band, the part that makes the trousers worth what they cost. Sleeves on shirts and blouses are straightforward; on a jacket the button placket is moved so the buttons end up where they belong.
Taking in, letting out, zips, repairs
Trousers at the waist, shirts and blouses at the side seams, jackets across the back, dresses wherever needed. Letting out works as long as there is seam allowance — I check that before I promise anything. After a change in weight it is the cheapest way to make a whole wardrobe wearable again. Zips in trousers, jackets, dresses, skirts, bags, rucksacks and sleeping bags. A broken zip is the most common reason a good jacket stays in the wardrobe — and it is almost always replaced in one go. Plus tears, holes, seams that have come apart, buttons and belt loops that have torn off. Small jobs are often done in half an hour. Where a hole is in plain sight, I talk it through with you beforehand: how invisible it realistically gets.
Occasions, traditional dress — and what to bring
A suit for the wedding, a dress for the ball, a dirndl or Lederhosen for the festival. Timing matters here: tell me early and the fitting can be done calmly instead of the day before. With Lederhosen I will tell you on the phone what is possible with yours. For trousers, bring the shoes you will wear with them — with flat shoes the hem falls differently than with a heel. And put the garment on: ten seconds of fitting saves the argument about why it still does not sit right.
Common questions
Does advice cost anything, and how do I pay? +
Advice is free: looking at it, measuring, and telling you what it costs — even if you decide against it afterwards. Payment is cash on handover; a bank transfer works too.
Why does everything say "from"? +
Because a straight hem on a pair of cotton trousers is not the same job as an original hem on heavy jeans with rivets. The list tells you the order of magnitude; I give you the firm price beforehand.
What if it does not fit afterwards? +
Then tell me. If it is down to my work, I alter it again and you do not pay twice.
